MULTIPLE OUTPUTS
This project reinterprets a historic graphic design poster through 144 iterative compositions created using only its original type, imagery, proportions, and color palette. Working within strict constraints pushed each variation to uncover new visual rhythms and narrative possibilities while remaining tied to the source.

These iterations ultimately informed a complete transformation of the poster into a functional calendar and stationery system—including a yearly and perpetual calendar, weekly planner, bookmarks, and additional printed pieces—extending the original design into a new, practical, and contemporary context.

The original poster: growing forms through function
At Maruzen Gallery / Hiroshi Ohchi

The project began with research into a historical poster—it’s designer, design elements, historical context, and more.

Working strictly within the original proportions, color palette, and content created a defined framework that challenged creativity and encouraged disciplined experimentation for the iteration process.

As the iterations continued, they got more experimental, breaking away from the poster’s orginal elements to become more abstract.
Can also see how throughout this process, I sometimes returned to the compositions from the beginning that weren’t as interesting to add in
    more elements.

The outcome:

In the end, ~65 of the strongest iterations were translated into a new context appropriate to the content.

The original poster has this motif of time—lifecycle of a tadpole -> a frog, as well as, how the automobile evolved—using this motif, the first output created was the weekly planner. Each week is accompanied by a new poster, hidden in the posters is a story—two frog seperated as tadpoles, look to unite with each other.

Included in the weekly poster is also a yearly calendar
The calendar is also RISO printed with different color combinations.

Reimagining the traditional idea of “calendar,” what else can tell time?
    The answer: the perpetual calendar

Additionally, bookmarks were designed using the graphic elements.
