BOOK DESIGN

Accordion Book
5.5”x 5.5”
In this project, we experimented with typography and image-making by manipulating original letterforms to create new compositions. The goal was to explore how the visual characteristics of the original letterform could inform new designs, developing a cohesive visual language. The final outcome was an accordion book, where we applied our understanding of composition, scale, contrast, and sequence to create a dynamic, visually engaging piece.

This project focuses on image, composition, and how type can function as both visual form and imagery. We started by experimenting with various techniques to create images using letterforms. From there, we created a new letterform composition that connects to the original, ensuring both share a consistent visual language and composition. Once the letterforms were established, we approached the project like crafting a story or musical piece—thinking about the flow and dynamics from start to finish.

As we worked through the project, we designed an accordion book, considering how principles like scale, texture, weight, and color could help guide the flow of the narrative. The accordion format presented the challenge of creating smooth transitions from one page to the next, ensuring the design felt cohesive and dynamic across the entire unfolding structure.
