WHAT IS GRAPHIC DESIGN? WHO IS A GRAPHIC DESIGNER?

SPRING 2025

GRAPHIC DESIGN
BOOK DESIGN

Perfect Binding
6”x 9”
This book explores what defines graphic design and who qualifies as a designer by presenting both formal and unconventional works. Through a dialogue process and personal reflection, the reader is encouraged to challenge their preconceived notions, leaving them with either clarity or ambiguity about the nature of graphic design.

This typographic system organizes the book into categories commonly associated with graphic design, such as poster design and typography, prompting the reader to question what truly defines graphic design and who qualifies as a designer. The exploration extends beyond formally trained "experts" and "taste makers," including graphic design created in unconventional spaces, as well as works from revered designers.

By presenting these elements, the reader is encouraged to form their own conclusions about what defines graphic design and who qualifies as a graphic designer. Rather than providing a definitive answer, the focus is on the dialogue process itself, which is more intriguing than the conclusion.

The reader is invited to reflect on their own biases and perceptions of what makes graphic design "good," "effective," "bad," or "ugly." Through a dialogue with a classmate and a personal reflection on the design collection and conversation, the book challenges preconceived notions, leaving the reader with either a clearer understanding or a sense of ambiguity.
